2D UI Designer

Overview

Design and animate intuitive, visually striking game interfaces that feel as alive as the worlds they inhabit. As a 2D UI Designer at Lunar Lizard, you will own the look, feel, and motion of our game interfaces — from HUDs and menus to icon systems and animated transitions. You will collaborate closely with technical artists, animators, and engineers to ensure UI assets are both beautiful and production-ready, while leveraging AI-assisted design tools to accelerate iteration and unlock new creative possibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design cohesive 2D UI systems — menus, HUDs, inventory screens, tooltips, icon sets — aligned with the game's visual identity
  • Create UI animations and motion transitions using After Effects, Spine 2D, or Rive to bring interfaces to life
  • Develop and maintain a scalable UI component library that artists and engineers can build on
  • Collaborate with the Pipeline Technical Lead to establish efficient asset handoff workflows from design tools to Unreal Engine
  • Work with technical artists and AI engineers to explore AI-assisted design tools for layout generation, iconography, and texture variation
  • Prototype interactive UI flows and communicate interaction intent clearly to engineering and gameplay teams
  • Define and uphold UI quality standards — readability, visual hierarchy, accessibility, and consistency across resolutions
  • Iterate rapidly on designs based on internal feedback, user testing, and creative direction
  • Mentor junior designers on motion principles, design systems thinking, and pipeline best practices

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience as a UI Designer or UI/UX Artist in games or interactive media
  • Strong portfolio showcasing game UI design with clear examples of motion and animation work
  • Expert-level proficiency in Figma and/or Adobe Illustrator for UI design and asset creation
  • Solid experience with After Effects, Rive and/or Spine 2D for UI animation and motion design
  • Understanding of game UI conventions — HUD readability, responsive scaling, controller/mouse input states
  • Awareness of AI generative design tools (e.g. generative icon creation, AI layout assistance) and openness to integrating them into the workflow
  • Fluent English for effective collaboration with cross-functional, international teams

Essential Soft Skills

  • Team player: Works hand-in-hand with engineers, technical artists, and game designers to balance creative ambition with technical constraints
  • Proactive mindset: Identifies UX friction points and inconsistencies early, and proposes solutions before they reach production
  • Motivation to grow: Enthusiastic about exploring AI-assisted design tools and pushing the boundaries of what game UI can look and feel like
  • User-centric thinking: Designs interfaces that are intuitive and accessible, not just visually impressive
  • Strong communicator: Can present and defend design decisions clearly to both creative and technical stakeholders
  • Iterative mindset: Comfortable working through rapid feedback cycles, pivoting quickly while maintaining design coherence
  • Office presence: Available on-site in Sofia for collaborative design reviews, motion direction sessions, and cross-team integration work
